Located in Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) Songdo International City, the library of Songdo International City has dual aims. It proposes a library that is ready for the future adaptation of space for books in the fast-changing era of data consumption. It challenges and reinterprets the traditional approach to knowledge and offers an architectural strategy that could represent the cultural identity of Songdo City. Moreover, it aims to create a central hub of knowledge and culture dedicated to promote a sense of public ownership and accessibility to knowledge. The overall building mass forms a playful terraced volumes, inviting both the locals and visitors opportunities for cultural and educational experiences on a diversified levels and heights.
The site is located on the flat topography built upon a reclaimed land of Songdo City. The neighboring residential area mainly consists of high-rise apartment buildings while a vast land of greenery that extends towards the Yellow sea is a significant advantage that the scheme has considered. In between the level difference of the surrounding urban context, the scheme proposes a library that could act as both the local and international destination for education and culture.
