Yisabu Dokdo Memorial Park International Competition
Design Period : Oct. 2017 - Nov. 2017
Architect : Simplex Architecture
Landscape Architect : Dongsimwon + studio 201
The project site is neither located in Dokdo that can best speak by itself the value and story of Dokdo, nor located in the center of metropolitan city like Seoul that can best provide the site with accessibility. Instead, not only does the site sit near sea in that the sea can be sufficiently appreciated with one’s five senses but also the site includes Mt. Yukhyang that used to be an island where Yisabu launched his voyage to Usanguk, currently Ulleungdo and Dokdo.
This project “Disclosed Nature” highlights such inherent natural and historical characteristics that the site and its components once had had and now still have. By concurrently unveiling three natures of the site (Topographical Nature, Hydrological Nature, Geographical Nature), Yisabu Dokdo Memorial Park becomes an irreplaceable place where people can synchronically experience Yisabu Dokdo through the integrated architecture and landscape that are proposed in this project.
Disclosed Earth (Topographical Nature)
First of all, this project discloses the topographical nature of the site that once had been an island on the sea and has been a reclaimed land. By excavating the existing earth, this project introduces the historical aspects of the site’s topography as the key elements of this monumental place.
Disclosed Sea (Hydrological Nature)
In addition, by reintroducing water on the recovered topography and incorporating the water with architectural programs such as education, publicity, experience and play/leisure regarding Yisabu and Dokdo, this project restores and reveals in various levels the hydrological nature that the site - onetime the port of departure to Usanguk – had had at that time.
Disclosed Regionality (Geographical Nature)
Moreover, this project discloses both the indigenous landscape and geographical potential of the site that can link the site with valuable natural/cultural/historical assets of the region that already exist in the vicinity of the site. This project enables Samcheok city to be much more attractive place to visit than ever.
Tourist Information Center
The visitors of the Yisabu Dokdo Memorial Park starts the tour of the park from the Tourist Information Center. The upper level of the building, accessible from the street level, includes entry lobby and information center where general information about Samcheok city and Yisabu Dokdo Memorial Park is provided. People will head down to the lower level in order to begin the architectural promenade of the Yisabu Dokdo Memorial Park.
Yisabu Memorial Hall
Passing by the water garden, the visitors enter Yisabu Memorial Hall. The double-height entrance lobby welcomes people, which is connected to the lounge where people can relax and enjoy the scenery of the stone plaza. The exhibition continues up to the upper level that accommodates Yisabu Exhibition room, Symbolic Exhibition Hall, and Lion Statue Exhibition Hall.
Dokdo Experience Space
Dokdo Experience Space is divided into two separate buildings, North wing and South wing. From the stone plaza, people enter into the North wing that includes Experience Space, Physical model exhibition space, and History exhibition space. Walking up to the upper level along the ramp, people can view the exhibition from above. After crossing the bridge that connects the two buildings, people can access the South wing where book café and multi-purpose room is located.
Culture and Art Village
The existing area that new culture and art village is to be built has been isolated from outside and composed of closed spaces with walls and lack of open spaces in-between. Deconstruction of the walls, replacement of some of the old existing buildings with open spaces and renovation of the remained buildings will introduce more people and activities into the area and enables the remained buildings to have more flexibility in terms of reprogramming.
